Description Edit

"Muscle Museum" is a single by the English rock band Muse from their album, Showbiz. Muscle Museum was the third single that the band released from the Showbiz album. The first single release date in the UK was November 22, 1999, in CD and 7" Vinyl format. The single was then re-released on October 9, 2000.

The title of the song is formed from two words either side of the word "Muse" in most dictionaries. The subject of the song is considered quite esoteric, with interpretations on various forums taking in topics. However, given that in interviews Matt Bellamy has stated that songs on the album Showbiz were influenced by the negative experience of growing up in Teignmouth, a generally accepted suggestion is that it refers to the experience of being a fledgling band in an unappreciative community, having to play so-called "toilet venues".

Music journalist Ben Myers wrote a biography of the band in 2004 entitled Muse: Inside the Muscle Museum.

Muscle Museum was first released in Europe on the 22 November 1999. It was released as a two-CD set and an accompanying 7" Vinyl. A separate single (consisting of only one CD) was released in Germany. Each piece of artwork for the two UK singles is slightly different, but both CDs feature a group photo of the band with an eye in the background. The song also appears on the Hullabaloo Live CD/DVD. On its first release, it got to number 43 in the UK charts.

The accompanying music video features an American "Picket Fence" style community in the style of Blue Velvet, afflicted by mass hysteria and uncontrolled weeping. Although the video is already quite unusual, a number of the original treatments suggested for the video had to be turned down due to the disturbing subject matter. The video was directed by Joseph Kahn, who worked with the band again nearly seven years later on the video for Knights of Cydonia. The end of the video, which showed two of the characters apparently committing suicide, both by drowning themselves, was edited for viewing on television. The original version can be found on the director's website, where the commentary states that Kahn was nearly ran over by a truck during filming.
